Jan. 17th, 2010 02:55 amYesterday I watched all three of Inagaki Hiroshi's movies about the life of Miyamoto Musashi. Really good films. But the subtitles were terrible... I don't know Japanese, and even I could tell they were terrible. But then the tape boxes didn't have any URLs on them, which likely places their issue before 1995, before the current American interest in Japanese pop culture really got moving. I hope the subs are better on recent DVDs.
I hadn't realized how much inspiration Stan Sakai had taken from these films-- I kept recognizing plot lines from his books. But then he changed them up in substantial ways and fleshed them out quite a bit.
