Aug. 28th, 2004 12:15 amAnd now Lou Dobbs is talking about an assault upon the middle class. Congratulations, Lou, you're covering an area that people were talking about back in the 80s. Except when they did, they were labeled 'radical' or 'leftists' and run out of town on a rail. Before long we'll see the third stage, where economists go "Of course the middle class is being destroyed. Dur! Where were you?"
It's amusing to hear Dobbs insist that corporations 'find a conscience.' The whole purpose of a corporation is to create a power bloc which can leverage an advantage for its members over other individuals in society, and in practical terms this means subverting equality and democracy. What use does such an entity have for a conscience? Dobbs kind of knows that it doesn't have any, which is why he has to argue that it's cheaper to keep jobs in America, and why we have to bribe corporations with tax breaks and subsidies to not outsource jobs, and all of that... I don't know if he's blowing smoke out his ass for the benefit of the groundlings, or if he really thinks he can appeal to conscience, when CEOs are legally obligated to secure profits, and their personal fortunes are tied to the stock price, which is tied to how much money they can screw out of the public every quarter.
I'm not sure what Mr. Dobbs' motivation is, either. Partly, I think, it's that his own audience is starting to take hits now. When the country was hemorrhaging its manufacturing jobs, there wasn't a cute name for it like 'outsourcing,' it was just part of 'free trade,' a force of nature that couldn't be stopped. Now that the white-collar jobs are going, it's those greedy capitalists. Is Dobbs just playing the good cop? His colleagues are pretty convincing in their apparent loathing of him. I'm sure before long he'll be labeled as some kind of rabid nationalist or racist, or worse yet, a socialist, for advocating the well-being of specific living individuals instead of 'the economy.'
Meanwhile, Alan Greenspan advises Americans to work until they die. Look for a later announcement in which Greenspan advises parents to send their children to work.
