Which would you say is more hopeless, to be a not terribly great writer who's eager to be published, or a pretty good writer who doesn't care if they're published or not?

Worse, there's a pretty good chance the crappy writer will get published and someone will develop a fandoma round it and you'll have to hear about it all the time.
